A private university in Beijing has sparked outrage after a disturbing incident involving a female student. She claimed that staff at the campus clinic asked her to pull down her pants to prove she was menstruating in order to get sick leave.
The incident happened at the Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology, an independent college linked to one of China’s top public universities. On May 15, the student posted a video online describing what happened. The video quickly went viral on Chinese social media.
In the video, the student is heard confronting a female staff member at the clinic, asking why such an invasive request was necessary.
“So, you’re saying every woman on her period has to take off her pants and show you to get a leave note?” the student asks.
“Basically, yes. It’s not my personal rule, it’s a regulation,” the staff member replies.
When the student asks to see the regulation in writing, the staff member goes silent but continues to refuse the leave note. She tells the student to go to a hospital for proof instead.
