The man, identified as Bimal Mondal, was arrested after he was seen walking through the streets carrying the severed head of his sister-in-law, named Sati Mondal or Pratima Mondal in different reports, along with a chopper or sickle-like weapon used in the crime.
The murder stemmed from a family dispute, possibly related to property issues or longstanding tensions, which escalated into a violent altercation. Locals alerted the police after witnessing the gruesome scene, and some recorded videos of Bimal walking with the severed head. He reportedly walked nearly three miles toward the Basanti police station, where he surrendered, still carrying the head and the weapon.
The victim’s body was found in a field, and the police have sent it for post-mortem examination while seizing the murder weapon. Initial investigations suggest the crime occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning, with a forensic team now examining the scene.
Eyewitnesses noted Bimal’s intense rage, as he was heard cursing the victim and her husband, claiming he was avenging years of perceived injustice. The local community is in shock, as frequent quarrels between Bimal and the victim had been reported, but no one anticipated such a horrific act.
